A rope halter in an actual draft size, made by people who know what they're doing with rope, paired with its matching lead.

These come as a set only.

Why a rope halter?

A flat halter spreads pressure across a wide strap, which is fine for everyday handling but easy for a big horse to lean into. A rope halter concentrates that pressure on a thinner line, so your horse feels a light cue clearly and you don't have to pull harder to be heard.

Rope halters are a favorite for groundwork, training, and leading a horse that likes to crowd your space or drag you to the grass. Some people simply prefer them for everyday leading because they're lighter and have no buckles or hardware to break.

One caution: a rope halter doesn't break under pressure the way a leather crown or breakaway halter can. Don't leave it on in the pasture or stall, or tie your horse with it where they could panic and get hung up.

The halter

Handmade by HayChix in Mineral Wells, Texas, from 1/4" braided cord. That's a good middle-ground thickness: substantial enough to give clear signals, without feeling like you're handling a ship's line.

The crown and noseband have extra stitching, which gives the halter a little more weight and a nicer feel in your hand.

The lead

Also made in Mineral Wells. The lead is 11.5 feet of 9/16" rope and ties directly onto the halter, with no snap. That keeps it lighter and gives you one less piece of hardware to break or bang around. It's long enough to work with but not so long it's tangling around your feet. It's soft and drapes loose rather than holding a coil, and it ends in a real leather popper, so color and texture will vary a bit from lead to lead.

It's UV treated to hold up outdoors and rated to 9,000 lbs of tensile strength. That's reassuring when the horse on the other end very literally weighs a ton.

*Owner note: Clicking on the first light pink icon it will align the leadropes with the halter colors so you can see them together. It's a system default that I am trying to reprogram.*
